Applied at approximately 400°C, DLC-Prism preserves the definition of the machining and engraving while producing a distinctive metallic color shift. Unlike conventional black DLC, its appearance changes with viewing angle and lighting, and slight tonal variation can occur between individual knives.The handle is engraved with an Ume (梅) plum-blossom motif, adding a traditional Japanese element without disrupting the clean lines of the SHU platform. In Japanese culture, Ume is associated with resilience and renewal because the plum tree flowers at the end of winter, often before other blossoms appear. On this knife, the motif is used as restrained surface engraving rather than as applied decoration. Within the SHU design, the fine Ume engraving works directly with the DLC-Prism finish. Depending on the light, the pattern can appear more pronounced or more subdued, while the changing titanium surface contrasts with the bright mirror-polished ZDP189 blade. Precision Button Lock Integration The SHU uses Rockstead’s Button Lock, integrated into the compact handle with the close tolerances expected from the brand. The button releases the lock without requiring the user to place fingers in the blade path during closing. Lockup is positive, blade play is kept to a minimum, and the mechanism provides a smooth, controlled action with a solid mechanical feel. Advanced Blade Construction: ZDP189 & Honzukuri Geometry At the center of the SHU’s cutting performance is a ZDP189 powder-metallurgy stainless-steel blade hardened to approximately 67 HRC. Rockstead pairs ZDP189 with its Honzukuri convex geometry. Rather than using a flat primary grind with a pronounced secondary bevel, Honzukuri forms a continuous convex profile toward the cutting edge, allowing thickness to build gradually behind the apex. At approximately 67 HRC, edge geometry becomes critical. The fine apex provides high cutting efficiency, while the convex section behind it gives the edge the material support required for stability. This combination is optimized for sharpness, low cutting resistance, and long edge retention. The Honzukuri profile is therefore not simply an aesthetic reference to traditional Japanese blades. It is a functional convex grind designed to balance a very fine cutting edge with sufficient support behind the apex. Precision Mirror Finish Each blade is finished to Rockstead’s characteristic mirror polish across the Honzukuri surface and down to the cutting edge. On a continuous convex grind, reflected lines make irregularities in the underlying geometry immediately visible, so the quality of the reflection also reveals the consistency of the grind itself.
