The Rockstead SAI-ZDP-AWR is built around the element that matters most: the blade. A ZDP189 cutting core clad in VG10, hardened to approximately 67 HRC, is shaped into Rockstead’s dual-convex Honzukuri geometry and taken to a full mirror finish. The titanium handle, finished in deep Antique Wine Red, keeps the rest of the knife deliberately restrained. The result is unmistakably Rockstead—technically serious, visually controlled, and made to be appreciated as much in the hand as under close inspection.
Antique Wine-Red Titanium Handle
The machined titanium handle is finished in Rockstead’s Antique Wine Red, a dark, subdued red that gives this version of the SAI a warmer character without turning it into a showpiece. In lower light, the finish appears deep and reserved. Under stronger light, the red becomes more apparent, and the machining begins to stand out. Against it, the mirror-polished blade carries almost all of the visual brightness. The result is rich without becoming flashy.
There is no engraving or added ornament fighting for attention. The handle relies on proportion, machining, material, and finish alone.
Precision Liner Lock
The SAI uses a liner lock, integrated cleanly into the titanium construction. It keeps the mechanism visually simple and leaves the blade as the focal point of the knife. Open, the SAI has the composed, purposeful feel expected from a precision folder; closed, the lockwork sits quietly within the handle rather than defining its appearance. Nothing here feels mechanically busy. That restraint suits the SAI.
ZDP189 / VG10 Clad Blade & Honzukuri Geometry
The blade uses a ZDP189 core clad in VG10, with the cutting core hardened to approximately 67 HRC.
ZDP189 at this hardness is all about edge performance: a very fine apex, high wear resistance, and exceptionally long edge retention. Rockstead does not rely on the steel alone, however. The blade is ground in the company’s dual-convex Honzukuri geometry, and that relationship between steel and grind is what gives the SAI its cutting character. Instead of a flat primary grind terminating in a pronounced shoulder behind the edge, Honzukuri carries a continuous convex curve toward the apex. Thickness builds progressively behind the edge, giving the extremely hard ZDP189 core the support it needs without creating unnecessary wedging through the cut. For an experienced knife user, this is where the SAI becomes interesting. The edge can remain extremely fine, yet it is not left structurally isolated. The convex geometry supports the apex while allowing the blade to move cleanly through material. This is a knife designed around controlled cutting, edge stability, and long-lasting sharpness—not prying, twisting, or impact abuse.
Rockstead Mirror Finish
The Honzukuri blade is finished to Rockstead’s signature full mirror polish, with a specified surface roughness of approximately 0.0045 μm. The visual effect is immediate, but the finish is more than cosmetic. On a continuous convex grind, a true mirror surface is unforgiving. Uneven grinding, flat spots, or inconsistencies in the curvature show themselves as distortion in reflected lines. The cleaner the reflection, the more clearly the underlying geometry can be read. That is part of what makes a Rockstead mirror finish so distinctive. It does not hide the grind. It exposes it. The highly refined surface also reduces drag as material moves along the blade face, working with the Honzukuri profile to produce the smooth, low-resistance cutting character associated with Rockstead. Look closely and the polish becomes less about shine and more about execution.
Leather Sheath
The SAI-ZDP-AWR is supplied with a leather sheath, offering a traditional way to protect and carry the knife.
The leather pairs naturally with the warmer Antique Wine-Red titanium, adding a softer material contrast to the hard, highly polished blade and precisely machined handle.
